HIOSH Advisory Committee

A. MISSION

The mission of the HIOSH Advisory Committee (hereto in referred to as the Committee) is to promote safe workplaces in Hawaii by providing advice and guidance to the Division. The Committee is a group of devoted professionals and stakeholders committed to accident prevention, as well as the promotion, education, and the resolution of occupational safety and health issues in Hawaii . The Committee provides the community aspect of governance of the safety & health of workers’ in Hawaii .  To this end, the committee brings the perspective of employer’s, union’s, professional safety & health association members, and trade organization members together to deliberate, resolve issues, provide direction for and guide the Division to ensure that HIOSH’s enforcement efforts are fair and effective.

B. FUNCTION

            ·         The Committee members represent various HIOSH stakeholders and provide advice and guidance to the division on:
                   
o        It’s programs
  
              o        Processes
                    o        Policies
  
              o        Strategic plans
  
              o        Standards
  
              o        Enforcement
  
                 o        Litigation policies/practices
  
              o        Outreach, Training and Consultation priorities
            ·         The Committee further is responsible for disseminating information to the stakeholder organizations on upcoming changes and;
  
          ·         Provides a public forum for issues involving worker safety & health, consultation & training and compliance;
  
          ·         Establish operating rules for this body to further its work in caring for the workers’ of Hawaii .
             ·         Establish procedures on how to set up, operate and get support for subcommittees for in depth work, when required.

 C. OBJECTIVES  

(a)

Promoting effective coordination and cooperation among the HIOSH stakeholders and participating in the community aspect of governance of Occupational Safety and Health in Hawaii ;

(b)

Formulating concerted strategic approaches to improve the safety and health of workers in Hawaii through effective and fair compliance, the best consultation practices available as well as training and outreach for employers on practical approaches to managing safety and health in the work place;

(c)

Enhancing effective information exchange among the organizations of the HIOSH Advisory Committee and relevant organizations outside the group dealing with occupational safety and health;

(d)

Bringing to the attention of HIOSH and to the relevant intergovernmental bodies, issues concerning the safety and health of employees in Hawaii that require attention and action from the division;

(e)

Promoting public awareness of the seriousness of worker health and safety statewide.
