FMCSA releases schedule for CSA (Comprehensive Safety analysis) 2010 initiative rollout

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on May 28 released the rollout schedule for its new commercial motor vehicle safety enforcement program, Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010.

Contrary to what some may believe, the FMCSA is right on target with their CSA 2010 rollout. Case in point, access to your BASIC scores (also known as standings or rankings) was scheduled for August. FMCSA has announced that access will begin on August 16th.

This is a further reminder that you need to be prepared for the November 30th rollout... the date is fast approaching.

FMCSA continues with CSA 2010 rollout

The FMCSA announced the next step in the phased rollout of Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010).

Motor Carrier Data Preview
In April 2010, FMCSA launched the CSA 2010 Data Preview Website which allowed commercial motor vehicle carriers to view an inventory of their safety performance data by the new Safety Measurement System’s (SMS) Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs).

On August 16, 2010, FMCSA will update the Data Preview Website by providing carriers with an assessment of where they stand in each BASIC based on roadside data and investigation findings. The BASICs will replace SafeStat’s Safety Evaluation Areas (SEAs) in December 2010, and this early look gives motor carriers an opportunity to understand and address their safety compliance issues right away.

Recent updates to SMS
The Data Preview assessments will be based on an improved SMS methodology. Click to view more.

Do ‘violation free’ inspections really help under CSA 2010?

In a word, yes! This is because of how the scoring in the BASICs (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories) works in the CSA 2010 Safety Measurement System (CSA 2010 SMS). Click to view more.

ATA voices concerns to Congress over CSA 2010 design

American Trucking Associations (ATA) expressed concerns about the current design of CSA 2010 — and how these flaws will affect the industry and highway safety if not corrected — in recent testimony before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highways and Transit. Roadcheck 2010 results posted by CVSA

Results from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Roadcheck 2010 reveal that the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) industry is hovering close to the record low out-of-service (OOS) rates set during 2009. Additionally, while overall inspection totals are down from the previous year’s records, more inspectors participated at more locations in this year’s event. This seems to indicate during 2010 that there was a shift to an increasing focus on mobile roadside inspections. Click to view more.
