Jennifer Shishido, CIH, of the Hawai'i Department of Labor and Industrial Relations will be presenting information about a new training program for safety novices called Pathway to Success.

Pathway to Success is a partnership between the Hawai'i Occupational Safety and Health Division (HIOSH), Dick Pacific Construction, Island Insurance, Risk Solution Partners, and the Veterans of Safety (VOS).  The target audience is new supervisors and managers and human resource professionals of primarily small businesses who have been assigned safety and health responsibilities as part of their collateral duties.  Sometimes they’re not even aware that safety and health is part of their responsibilities until something goes wrong.

We looked at the various kinds of safety and health training being offered in the state and found that the needs of small companies were not being met.  What is unique about Pathway to Success is that attendees will gain specific competencies (skills) that will help their companies reduce accidents, workers’ compensation costs and reduce liability.  Each 2-hour session will be interactive and skills-based to enable participants to easily practice and implement within their own companies.  The 9 modules will be broken out into 3 clusters spaced out over 3 quarters within a year to allow participants to practice new skills and share experiences.  At the completion of the 9 modules, attendees will be awarded a Health and Safety Practitioner Level 1 Certificate and will further be matched with a mentor from VOS to provide additional guidance, coaching and counseling to help them transition actionable items between classroom and the workplace.

Jennifer would like to introduce Pathway to Success to ASSE members and provide an opportunity for safety and health professionals to get involved in this ground breaking event.
